Inventor of Cone Penetration Testing

Geomil has invented Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) technology, a method that identifies the geo-engineering aspects of the soil. Nowadays this cone penetration testing technology is used all around the world for taking decisions, such as the need for pile-driving, prior to construction projects. Innovations have put Geomil at the top of the CPT world and the company constantly improves both the engineering and the software.

Well-founded information

The CPT method, also known as the “Dutch cone test”, involves a cone-shaped head, the cone, being pushed into the ground at a constant speed. The resistance registered by the cone generates extensive information about the geo-engineering aspects of the soil, such as the point at which the groundwater is reached, the relative density and the resistance to movement. This data is processed and made visible by the process software, thereby giving the builder the basis for deciding on the preparatory measures needed to build new constructions.

Seafloor test

A specific form of CPT testing is the Seafloor Plate Load Test. This test is vital for the offshore market and, for instance, for the construction of offshore wind farms to identify the maximum bearing load of the seafloor. For this test a 0.2 m2 steel plate is placed on the seafloor at a depth of 40 metres. The load is steadily increased up to a maximum of 25 tonnes and the effects constantly registered with an accuracy of 0.1 mm.

Technology and knowledge

Apart from the right equipment, CPT requires specific knowledge. Years of experience in soil analysis and interpretation have made Geomil an absolute expert in this field. Training ensures that users are able to correctly interpret the results of the analysis software and draw conclusions.
